Snake River
Good surface action is occurring on cloudy days with precipitation as trout feed on intermittent to heavy midge emergences. Eddies and riffles are the primary targets for this action. It is occurring from approximately 10am and continuing until 4pm, with 1pm to 4pm being the most active time of the day. Go with emergent patterns primarily.
Nymphs are working best when fished as part of a dry-dropper rig in riffles, eddies, seams, and ledge rock pools. Midge patterns are the best way to go. Whitefish spawning has intensified in riffles and on riffle shelves. As a result, there is decent action on egg patterns in these water types.
Streamer fishing has been decent on the lower reaches from Wilson Bridge down to Sheep Gulch. Small and moderately sized patterns are working best when fished on sinking tips in the 3ips to 6ips range. Vary up your retrieves and target deep eddies, seams, and ledge rock pools.
Dry flies – Micro Mary Kays, Micro Bruces, Parachute Midges, Etha-Wing Tricos, CDC Midge Emergers, and Pheasant Tail Emergers.
Nymphs – Duracells, Hustler Lights, Zebra Midges, Rojo Midges, Ice Cream Cone Midges, Booty’s Day-2 Midge Pupa, Perdigons, Clown Eggs, Veiled Eggs, and Otter’s Soft Milking Egg.
Steamers – Booty Call Minnows, Arum’s Lil’ Kim, Coffey’s Sparkle Minnow, Woolley Buggers, Pine Squirrel Zonkers, and Slump Busters.
South Fork
As on the Snake, cool air and water temps is contributing to some decent midge hatches on the surface with the best action coming from approximately noon until 4pm in riffles and riffle pools, side channels, seams, and banks with slow to moderate currents. Both adult and emergent patterns are working equally well.
Nymphing has been good with midge patterns in the same water as dry flies. Eddies are also worth targeting. Egg patterns have been working best on the upper reaches from the Dam down to Conant. Target riffles and seams primarily.
Streamers have been performing best on the lower reaches from Wolf Eddy down to Lorenzo with banks, structure, and seams producing well. Go with moderately sized patterns fished on intermediate sinking lines or sinking tips in the INT to 3ips range. The hotspot has been from approximately noon until 4pm,
Dry flies – Parachute Adams, Parachute Midges, CDC Tricos, Loop-Wing Tricos, CDC Midge Emergers, Chez’s Krystal Wing Midge Emerger, and Pheasant Tail Emergers.
Nymphs – Duracells, Brillion’s Lucent Jig, Zebra Midges, Ice Cream Cone Midges, Root Beer Midges, Jujubee Midges, Perdigons, Glo-Bugs, Veiled Eggs, and Eggstacy.
Streamers – Geisha Girls, Arum’s Lil’ Kim, Galloup’s Mini Dungeon, Coffey’s Sparkle Minnow, Booty’s Tri-Bunny, and Clouser Minnows.
