Snake River Angler Fly Fishing Report for December 5th, 2024

Snake River

Ledge rock pools from South Park down to Sheep Gulch are the key targets for dry and dry-dropper rigs when using midge imitations (Zebra Midges, Perdigons, Day-2 Midges, etc) with the most productive action occurring from around noon until around 4pm.  Riffles and seams can offer good action with these as well, but riffle pools continue to fish best with egg patterns as whitefish are finishing up spawning.  Production can occur as early as 10am, but figure 11am to be the real start.  Focus primarily on those pools with shelves at the head that are 8” to 18” in depth and moderate to fast current speeds.

South Fork

Whitefish spawning has, for the most part, subsided on the South Fork. There are still opportunities to get into fish with roe imitations of the upper reach on riffles with moderate current speeds and moderate depths.  Midge and BWO imitations are producing just as well in the riffles, as well as on flats (after 2pm) seams, and banks with slow to moderate current speeds.

Streamer fishing is decent most days and good when there is a bit of warmth and sunshine.  It is purely an afternoon act at the moment, with action starting after 12pm and going until after 4pm.  Moderately sized patterns are working better than smaller batifish imitations.  Go with bright or neutral colors fished on floating lines or short INT tips and target slower water with slow line strips.
